Fitzgerald and Gomez player spotlights
LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — The American Soccer Club New York continues to bolster its roster with homegrown Long Island talent.
The club announced on Friday the signings of forward Juan Gomez and midfielder Sean Fitzgerald.
Gomez participated in youth soccer in part with Albertson SC in the Long Island Junior Soccer League and also played with the SUSA Academy. He played at Brentwood High School from 2020 through ’22, earning Top Drawer Soccer All-America honors while competing alongside fellow ASC New York signee Stalyn Acosta. At Queens College as a freshman in 2023, Gomez tallied a goal and two assists in 17 matches as the program won its first-ever conference title. He more recently has played in USL2.
“Juan is an extremely technical player, who has the ability to play into positive space quickly,” ASC New York coach John Fitzgerald said. “He can be explosive in tight areas, which makes him dangerous in transition, and therefore exciting to watch. “He played for me in USL2, which is the same level as NPSL, so he brings experience and knowledge of what’s needed to be successful. His playing pedigree includes a highly successful Brentwood High School team here on Long Island, where he played a major role.”
A Smithtown native, Sean Fitzgerald played some of his youth soccer with the Smithtown Kickers in the LIJSL. He has played 32 matches spanning the past three seasons with Division I Binghamton after leading Smithtown High School West in scoring and earning team MVP honors as a senior. He participated in the 2021 Long Island All-Star Game and was part of the 2018-19 Eastern New York ODP team that won the East Region championship. He also played with the New York Cosmos Developmental Academy. He joins former Binghamton teammate Devin Heanue with ASC New York, and like Gomez played in USL2.
“Sean possesses a high level of game intelligence,” Coach Fitzgerald said. “His awareness and understanding are strengths that make him valuable in midfield decisions. He played for me in USL2, so he also brings experience and knowledge of what to expect at this level, and is a vocal leader on the field. His playing background includes playing in the DA for the New York Cosmos, after starting his journey with his town club on Long Island, so he’s another example of a local product for us.”
ASC New York will begin its inaugural season in the National Premier Soccer League on Sunday, May 4, against Osner’s FC at Hofstra University’s Captains Field. Stay tuned for the official kit release as well as upcoming announcements on the team’s nickname and additional player signings.
