AMERICAN SOCCER CLUB NEW YORK TO FACE THE NEW YORK COSMOS IN THE KICK ALS! CUP THIS WEDNESDAY JUNE 24TH
Part of the proceeds from the exhibition match to benefit ALS Ride for Life
Long Island, NY (June 22nd, 2026) – American Soccer Club New York of the National Premier Soccer League will host the iconic New York Cosmos in the “KICK ALS! Cup”, an exhibition match on Wednesday June 24th at Lavalle Stadium on the campus of Stony Brook University. Chase Bank will be presenting free soccer balls to the first 250 fans in attendance with kickoff for this match will be at 7pm.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit ALS Ride for Life.
“We are thrilled to again partner with American Soccer Club NY for another KICK ALS! Match in support of ALS Ride for Life,” said KICK ALS! Co-Founder Thomas Fraehmke.
Fraehmke’s wife Marlene was diagnosed with ALS in April 2004 before passing away in October 2014. Fraehmke launched KICK ALS! with his then eight-year-old son Christian who now works as a Design Coordinator for the Cosmos.
The Fraehmke family has deep roots with both teams.
“Back in November, I noted American Soccer Club NY’s partnership announcement with the New York Cosmos, with whom we had KICK ALS! matches from 2013 to 2015. I wasn’t, at first, aware of the planned friendly match, but once that was mentioned, I immediately thought…The KICK ALS! Cup! I thank Jim Kilmeade and Erik Stover for embracing the idea and, as Founder, I am very proud to have a beautiful trophy to present to the inaugural winner and hopefully every year going forward.”
Prior to this season, ASC New York and the Cosmos formed a multi-year partnership to strengthen regional player development on Long Island creating a direct pathway for players to reach the professional level. The agreement also includes an annual exhibition match between the two clubs on Long Island.
“The American Soccer Club New York is proud to bring this marquee exhibition match to Lavalle Stadium at Stony Brook University in partnership with the New York Cosmos,” said ASC New York Managing Partner and General Manager Jim Kilmeade. “This is more than just a game. It’s a landmark moment for soccer on Long Island.”
This match marks the return of the Cosmos to Long Island where they called home at various times in their history. The Cosmos played at Hofstra Stadium in the original North American Soccer League in 1971 and 1972. The Cosmos, once again, called Hofstra home when they returned to the pitch at Shuart Stadium in 2013 after an almost 30-year hiatus, playing in the new North American Soccer League. In 2018, the Cosmos B team played at Captain’s Field at Hofstra.
“This is a great opportunity for us to play again in front of our fans on Long Island,” said Cosmos Chief Executive Officer Erik Stover.
In addition to raising money for a very worthy cause, there’s a lot on the line Wednesday night including the trophy and bragging rights…
…especially for a member of the American Soccer Club NY organization who grew up rooting for the Cosmos before ultimately working for the team.
“The Cosmos are an iconic team, globally known,” said Fighting Tomcats Head Coach John Fitzgerald who once served as Vice-President and Director of the Cosmos’ Training and Development Program as well as an Assistant Coach for the Cosmos B team.
“Personally, they were my first favorite team as a kid, with the likes of Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, and Giorgio Chinaglia. Our coaches took us to watch them live because they were right here in New York. Truly amazing memories. And then to work and coach for them years later made the connection even deeper and more special for me. It’s an honor for American Soccer Club NY to play the Cosmos, and admittedly a little bittersweet to coach against them. I still support them, but for this game, I’m all American Soccer Club New York.”
